Azmatullah Omarzai and Hashmatullah Shahidi join the list of the highest partnership runs for Afghanistan in the World Cups with 121 runs in the match against India.

Highest partnerships for Afghanistan in World Cups

Afghanistan is scheduled to play in the 9th ICC World Cup 2023 match against India on October 11 at Arun Jaitley Stadium. Afghanistan players Shahidi and Azmatullah were impressive with their partnership score of 121 which is the second-highest partnership score for Afghans in World Cups.

Winning the toss Afghanistan chose to bat where Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran opened the innings while Bumrah opened the bowling attack. The openers had a moderate start as Gurbaz scored 21 runs and was dismissed by Hardik Pandya. Ibrahim Zadran was dismissed by Jasprit Bumrah for 22 runs in the seventh over.  With the dismissal of Rahmat for 16 runs by Shardul Thakur, Bangladesh was down to three wickets scoring 63 runs.

Shahidi came to the rescue as he scored 80 runs and was dismissed by Kuldeep Yadav, while Azmatullah scored 62 runs on 69 deliveries and was sent out by Hardik Pandya. They had a good partnership score which helped the side on the scoreboard.

Other batters were sent out with low figures by the intense bowling attack from Indian bowlers. Jasprit Bumrah dismissed four wickets while Hardik Pandya scalped two wickets. Thakur and Kuldeep Yadav dismissed one wicket each. By the end, Afghanistan scored 272 runs in 50 overs losing 8 wickets.

With a target of 273, the Indian skipper Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan opened the innings while Fazalhaq Farooqi opened the bowling attack. Rohit Sharma had a good start as he scored fifty. India has been playing steadily and increasing their score score.

The partnership score of  Azmatullah and Shahidi against India is the second-highest partnership score for Afghanistan in World Cups.

The partnership between Ikram Alikhil and Rahmat Shah scored 133 runs against West Indies in World Cup 2019 tops the list. Asghar and Hashmatullah Shahidi’s partnership score of 94 runs against England in the 2019 World Cup stands third in the list.

Asghar and Samiullah Shinwari’s partnership score of 88 against Sri Lanka in World Cup 2015 stands fourth while the partnership score of 86 against New Zealand in World Cup 2015 is the fifth highest score for Afghanistan.
