The former India cricketer and commentator Aakash Chopra has backed the Workload management of Jasprit Bumrah, referring to the spearhead as a national treasure.
He said that the national team must take a flexible approach to protecting a ‘genius player.’
Speaking on the Great Indian Cricket show on Doordarshan, Chopra said there was little reason to ignore Bumrah’s workload requirements if the fast bowler’s body needed rest, particularly given his importance in the Indian team across formats.
Jasprit Bumrah is unavailable for the Sri Lanka tests with a recurring left knee issue and swelling.
Chopra said there was little reason to overlook the fast bowler’s workload requirements if his body needed time away from the game.
“If you have a genius like Jasprit Bumrah, and if his body needs some rest, if his workload needs to be managed, why would you not do it? Bumrah is a genius. Many people believe that if you are fit, then you should play. If you are not, then don’t play,” said Aakash Chopra.

“India will still manage. It will manage. Life goes on, whether there is someone or not. But if you have a genius like Bumrah, if his body needs some rest, if his workload needs to be managed, why would you not do it? It’s a very simple thing,” he added.
Jasprit Bumrah sustained a knee problem while fielding during India’s ODI against England on July 16 at Cardiff. The 32-year old is undergoing rehabilitation at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru.
With no timeline for his return, uncapped Auqib Nabi has been added as replacement for India’s squad for upcoming two match test series.
Jasprit Bumrah has been among India’s top performers across formats, making his workload recurring topic amid the demands of international cricket.
Aakash Chopra acknowledged India can cope without premier fast bowler, but believes that should not come at the costof compromising his long-term fitness.
Currently, Shubman Gill-led India are preparing for a two-match test series against Sri Lanka with the first test scheduled at Galle.
India will be missing their services of Bumrah, and will be managing pace options with Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna and Gurnoor Brar. The two match test series will begin on August 15 at Galle International Stadium, Galle.
