Chennai Super Kings former skipper MS Dhoni left everyone in awe following his unbeaten 37 runs off 16 in his IPL 2024 batting debut played against Delhi Capitals on March 31, 2024.

Ahead of the IPL 2024 start, MS Dhoni stepped down as the CSK skipper where the team management named Ruturaj Gaikwad as their new captain for the season. Following the decision many cricket experts praised MSD for his smart move.

Dhoni who was once praised as the greatest finisher of all time once again showed his skill with bat by scoring 37 runs off just 16 deliveries. Though CSK lost the game by 20 runs, CSK and MSD fans were treated with THALA’s aggression with the bat.

Dhoni walked out to bat after CSK lost their top 6 wickets and slammed 37 runs which also included 4 boundaries and 3 sixes. Dhoni also won the Electric Striker of the Match award for his 231.25 strike rate.

During the clash against Delhi Capitals, Dhoni also became the first player to reach the 300 dismissal mark in the T20 format.

DC vs CSK Match Overview

Winning the toss, Delhi Capitals decided to bat first where Prithvi Shaw and David Warner opened the inning. Delhi Capitals who is eager to register their first victory of the season made an impressive start by scoring 93 runs for their first wicket.

David Warner scored his 62nd IPL half-century and helped Delhi Capitals to make an aggressive start. Mustafizur broke the opening partnership by dismissing Warner for 52 runs.

Following his dismissal, Prithvi Shaw too lost his wicket for 43 runs when DC scored 103 runs. Though Delhi’s middle and lower order failed to make an impact, DC’s skipper Rishabh Pant made his way back into the game with a half-century.

Rishabh Pant’s maiden IPL 2024 fifty helped DC to register 191 runs for 5 wickets loss at the end of 20 overs.

On the other hand, CSK made a struggling start as their opening duo lost their wickets without making an impact on CSK’s scoreboard. Khaleel Ahmed dismissed Ruturaj Gaikwad(1) and Rachin Ravindra(2) and made the dream start for the team.

Following the duo’s dismissal, Ajinkya Rahane and Daryl Mitchell made a 68-run stand and showed some promise but Axar Patel dismissed Mitchell for 34 runs and broke the partnership.

Soon Ajinkya Rahane also lost his wicket for 45 runs to Mukesh Kumar while Sameer Rizvi was also dismissed off the very next delivery and returned to the pavilion with a golden duck.

At one stage of the match, CSK fans started to feel that the match was not moving in their favour but they were left happy with MS Dhoni’s batting treat. MS Dhoni scored an unbeaten 37 runs off 16 deliveries at a strike rate of 231.25 which includes 4 boundaries and 3 sixes.

At the end of 20 overs, CSK fell 20 runs short of the victory and registered their first loss of the season against Delhi Capitals who marks their first victory of the season.

Chennai Super Kings will play their next match of the season against SRH on April 5 in Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad.
