UP Warriorz who failed to qualify for the last year’s playoffs named Indian player Deepti Sharma as their new captain for the WPL 2025 season. Alyssa Healy who led UP Warriorz last season, was forced to withdraw from the tournament due to a stress injury in her right foot.
As per WPL 2025 schedule, the first match will be played between Gujarat Giants Women vs Royal Challengers Bengaluru Women on February 14 in Kotambi Stadium, Vadodara.
UP Warriorz managed to secure only three victories out of the eight league games. UP Warriorz who finished in third place in the first edition of the tournament pushed down to the fourth spot in the last season.
Deepti Sharma will replace Alyssa Healy as the new captain of UP Warriorz for the TATA WPL 2025 season. For the past few months, the Australian wicketkeeper-batter has struggled with injuries.
Healy missed multiple matches in the Women’s T20 World Cup and the latter half of the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) due to a knee injury. Additionally, a foot injury ruled her out of the T20I leg of the Women’s Ashes.
Former India batter Suresh Raina announced Deepti as the franchise’s captain on Star Sports during the build-up of the second ODI between India and England. Deepti in fact presented Raina with a UP Warriorz jersey to kickstart a new era for the team.
Deepti Sharma was roped in by Warriorz for INR 2.60 Crores during the inaugural auction. So far, Deepti Sharma has played 17 matches bagged 19 wickets and also scored 385 runs.
It is worth mentioning that Deepti Sharma was also named in ICC’s 2024 Women’s T20I Team of the Year, alongside India teammates Smriti Mandhana and Richa Ghosh.
