The orange cap in the Indian Premier League(IPL) is awarded to the player with the most runs in the tournament. The award has been included in the tournament from its inaugural series(2008 IPL).
David Warner is the player who bags the cap the most number of times(3 times) followed by “Sixer King” Chris Gayle with a couple of times. Virat Kohli crowns the top position in the most run-getter in IPL history also also holds the cap for a year.

Interestingly, Australia’s Shaun Marsh is the only uncapped player to have ever clinched the award. Marsh achieved this in the inaugural edition of the tournament when he was only 24.

2008 – Shaun Marsh (Kings XI Punjab)
Australian batsman Shaun Marsh, playing for Kings XI Punjab was the inaugural winner of the orange cap in 2008. The left-hand batsman scored 616 runs from just 11 matches at a phenomenal average of 68.44 and a strike rate of 139.68.
Marsh scored one century and five half-centuries as he took KXIP to the semifinals of the maiden edition of IPL. With all IPL teams having star-studded batting lineups, Marsh’s orange cap victory came as a surprise to many.
2009 – Matthew Hayden (Chennai Super Kings)
This wasn’t a surprise at all. Hayden, representing Chennai Super Kings, justified his billing as one of the hardest hitters in the game at that time as he scored 572 runs in the 2009 edition of IPL. The Australian scored these runs in just 12 matches at an average of 52 with a magnificent strike rate of 144.81.
The second season of the IPL was played in South Africa and Hayden enjoyed himself on the bouncy tracks which were quite similar to his home conditions in Australia.
2010 – Sachin Tendulkar (Mumbai Indians)
The master blaster was in scintillating form in the 2010 edition of IPL. Tendulkar, captaining Mumbai, led from the front and guided his side to the finals where they narrowly lost to the MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings. Sachin scored 618 runs in 15 matches at an average of 47.53 and a strike rate of 132.61.
2011 – Chris Gayle (Royal Challengers Bangalore)
The Universal Boss Chris Gayle has been crowned with the Orange cap for the year’s tournament for his outranged performance for RCB. Gayle scored 608 runs in 12 matches at an astonishing average of 67.55 and a breathtaking strike rate of 183.13. Gayle also scored two centuries in the tournament.
2012 – Chris Gayle (Royal Challengers Bangalore)
Yes! it’s Gayle’s era the Windies batsman once again has been awarded the orange cap. And Gayle is the only player who crowns the orange cap for two consecutive years. In 15 matches, Gayle scored 733 runs at an average of 61.08 and a searing strike rate of 160.74. The West Indian made one century and seven half-centuries in this edition.
2013 – Michael Hussey (Chennai Super Kings)
Mr Cricket Mike Hussey was a vital cog in the Chennai Super Kings line-up of 2013. Hussey’s prowess and finishing with the bat took CSK to the finals of the 2013 edition. The Australian, Hussey, scored 733 runs in 17 matches at an average of 52.35 with a decent strike rate of 129.50.
2014 – Robin Uthappa (Kolkata Knight Riders)
The Indian cricketer who struggles to fit into a position in the Indian cricket team has got a chance to show himself in the IPL 2014 edition. Batting in the middle order, Uthappa became a dependable workhorse for KKR as they won the IPL crown for the second time. In 16 matches, Uthappa scored 660 runs at an average of 44 with a strike rate of 137.78.
2015 – David Warner (Sunrisers Hyderabad)
The Australian opening batsman David Warner proved himself by crowing the Orange cap for the year 2015. In 14 matches, Warner scored 562 runs at an average of 43.23. His strike rate of 156.54 helped in giving rapid starts to SRH throughout the tournament.
2016 – Virat Kohli (Royal Challengers Bangalore)
It’s an era of King Kohli, playing for RCB the aggressive Indian batsman bags the Orange cap for the 2016 edition of IPL. Though players from RCB create various records in IPL, the Bangalore-based franchise still fails to lift their maiden trophy.
Kohli scored an unbelievable 973 runs in the tournament, which still remains a record for the most runs in a single edition. The Indian finished with an average of 81.08 and a strike rate of 152.03. He also scored a record four centuries in this edition.
2017 – David Warner (Sunrisers Hyderabad)
After narrowly getting edged out for the 2016 edition’s orange cap by Virat Kohli, David Warner continued his fine run and won his second orange cap in IPL 2017. Captaining his side, Warner showcased excellent consistency with the bat as SunRisers reached the playoffs in 2017.
The Australian opener scored 641 runs in 14 matches at an average of 58.27 and a strike rate of 141.81.
2018 – Kane Williamson (Sunrisers Hyderabad)
After the Australian opener, David Warner was banned due to the ball-tampering scandal the Kiwi player led the SRH. Though they failed to lift the trophy for the year Williamson played a vital role in the middle order, playing the role of the sheet anchor.
In 17 matches, Williamson scored 735 runs at an average of 52.50 and a strike rate of 142.44.
2019 – David Warner (Sunrisers Hyderabad)
With an outstanding performance in the 2019 IPL Warner grabs the orange cap for the third time and becomes the player to bag the award three times in IPL history.
Warner scored 692 runs in 12 matches at an amazing average of 69.20 with a strike rate of 143.86. Warner made one century and seven half-centuries.
2020 – KL Rahul (Kings XI Punjab)
Though KXIP failed to enter into IPL 2020 playoff their skipper KL Rahul with an outstanding 670 runs holds the orange cap for IPL 2020. Playing 14 matches KL Rahul scored 670 runs at a strike rate of 129.34.
With the highest run of 132* KL bagged a century and five half-centuries. KL Rahul strikes 58 boundaries and 23 sixes in the IPL 2020 tournament.
2021 – Ruturaj Gaikwad (Chennai Super Kings)
Ruturaj Gaikwad finished the tournament with 636 runs in the 2021 Indian Premier League, becoming the youngest Orange Cap winner in IPL’s history.
The 24-year-old had earlier become the third batsman in CSK’s history to score more than 600 runs in an IPL season. Michael Hussey (733 runs, 2013) and Ambati Rayudu (602 runs, 2018) are the only other batters who have scored 600+ runs in a season for CSK.
2022 – Jos Buttler (Rajasthan Royals)
Rajasthan Royals’ opening batsman Jos Buttler scored a mammoth 863 runs at an average of 57.53 in 17 matches. It includes 4 centuries and as many as half-centuries.
Butter with his 4 centuries equals Virat Kohli’s record of most centuries by a player in a single season. But Virat’s most runs in a season remain unbeaten to date.
Jos Buttler’s Rajasthan Royals lost the IPL 2022 final against Gujarat Titans and failed to end their 14-year-long wait to lift their second IPL trophy.
2023 – Shubman Gill (Gujarat Titans)
Gujarat Titans opening batter Shubman Gill won the 2023 orange cap by scoring a massive 890 runs. Gill has scored 3 centuries and 4 half centuries in the process of becoming the leading run-scorer of the season.
Gujarat Titans managed to qualify for the final game but failed to clinch the trophy and lost the IPL 2023 final to CSK.
